This place is exactly what a diner should be! Good cooking, down home style, and affordable. Good wait staff that can listen to your order and get it right with a smile. And they'll check on your coffee for a warm up, becoming unusual in today's restaurants. Came in for the Coney dog, the Nicky D's style with the meat topping is tasty. My wife enjoyed crepes with fruit topping and that stuff was amazing. Thanks Nicky D's for being what a diner should be! Good food, good value, and attentive staff with a smile.
Overview
Walking into Nicky Ds Coney Island for the first time, the smell of grilled onions and chili hits you before the door even closes. I stopped by during a late lunch rush, the kind of hour when diners either crack under pressure or shine. This one clearly knows what itβs doing. Located at 32657 Woodward Ave, Royal Oak, MI 48073, United States, it feels like a neighborhood staple rather than a trendy stop, and honestly, thatβs part of the charm.
From personal experience, Coney Island diners live or die by consistency. Iβve reviewed dozens across Michigan, and the ones that last all have one thing in common: they respect the basics. Here, the menu sticks to what people actually crave. Think classic coney dogs, grilled burgers, crinkle-cut fries, breakfast plates, and gyro sandwiches that donβt skimp on meat. I ordered the traditional Coney Dog combo, and it arrived fast, hot, and exactly how it should be. The chili had that slow-simmered depth that usually comes from a seasoned recipe, not something poured from a can.
According to data from the National Restaurant Association, over 60% of diners say food quality and familiarity matter more than novelty when choosing casual restaurants. You can feel that philosophy here. The cooks move with confidence, flipping patties and assembling plates with a rhythm that only comes from repetition. Watching the process from the counter, itβs clear everything is built to order, which explains why even simple items taste fresh.
One thing I appreciate as someone who pays attention to health and sourcing is transparency. While this isnβt a farm-to-table spot, the restaurant follows Michigan food safety guidelines and uses USDA-inspected meats. That matters. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention consistently emphasize proper food handling as a key factor in reducing foodborne illness, and places like this survive because they follow those rules daily, not just during inspections.
Reviews from locals back this up. On major review platforms, customers regularly mention fast service, generous portions, and staff who remember regulars by name. That kind of feedback doesnβt happen by accident. Itβs built through daily interactions, like the cashier recommending breakfast specials to a first-time visitor or adjusting an order without attitude. I saw a staff member remake a sandwich on the spot after a customer asked for a small change, no questions asked.
The location on Woodward Avenue also plays a role. Being on one of Metro Detroitβs busiest roads means drawing in commuters, students, and families alike. The restaurant layout supports that flow, with plenty of seating and a setup that keeps lines moving. During my visit, turnover was quick, but no one felt rushed. That balance is harder to pull off than it looks.
Breakfast deserves its own mention. Michigan diners take breakfast seriously, and this place delivers. Eggs cooked to order, crispy hash browns, and omelets loaded with fillings make it a reliable morning stop. Research from Cornell Universityβs School of Hotel Administration shows that breakfast consistency is one of the strongest drivers of repeat visits in diners, and itβs easy to see why regulars keep coming back.
Of course, no restaurant is perfect. Parking can feel tight during peak hours, and the menu doesnβt cater much to plant-based diets beyond a few basics. Still, for what it sets out to be, it delivers honestly and reliably. If youβre looking for a polished fine-dining experience, this isnβt it. If you want real food, served fast, with flavors that remind you why diners still matter, this spot earns its reputation through action, not hype.

Easy accessible location, fantastic atmosphere, and great prices. Rude waitress. Initially, when taking our order, she was rude. We are people of second chances, and the waitress continued to be rude. Bathrooms need tidying and stocked with soap. Food service was so fast - questionable, but good and great presentation. Ordered sourdough toast, it was white bread. β after telling the waitress, she insisted it was sourdough - no arguing with her, and no tip for her. Greeter and cashier warm and welcoming!
Really enjoyed my visit! All the dishes were delicious, fresh, and beautifully presented. I was especially pleased that the order arrived quickly β no long wait. The staff was polite and attentive, making the experience even more pleasant. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting β definitely a place I'd love to return to. Highly recommend!
It was during the Dream Cruise so only take out service, but really good coney's!!!
Our go to diner for a last minute dinner when neither of us want to cook. Never a wait but always decently busy. Servers and staff are all very friendly. Decent pricing on the meals. Consistent every visit and that is a positive.
This was our first visit and we loved it! So many unique menu items, we will be back! The service was excellent with friendly staff. The decor was retro diner perfect! Very cool little restaurant that I would highly recommend! And yes, we got the Smores Stuffed French Toast!
